Green-lipped mussel - ingredients

The green-lipped mussel belongs to the mussel family and originally comes from New Zealand. The joint-strengthening effect of green-lipped mussel meat (also called green-lipped mussel extract) is due in particular to the ingredients glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and chondroitin sulfates. Both active ingredients in combination have a constructive effect on the dog's articular cartilage. This is better supplied with nutrients, which results in a cartilage-regenerating effect. The increased formation of synovial fluid (synovia) leads to an optimized buffering effect on the bone ends, which significantly supports the functionality of the joints.

Chondroitin and Glucosamine

A lot of water can be bound between the collagen fibers of the cartilage to give the joint flexibility and pressure stability. Chrondroitin sulfate optimizes the water content of the joint cartilage and thus regulates its resilience.
Glucosamine is also part of the synovial fluid. This has two important tasks for joint health: On the one hand, the joint fluid (synovia) supplies the cartilage with nutrients that are important for the maintenance and regeneration of the cartilage tissue. This means that the joints of particularly active dogs remain permanently strong and flexible. On the other hand, the fluid in the joint serves as an important shock buffer that takes pressure off the cartilaginous and bony structures.
Glucosamine and chondroitin are found in large quantities only in animal cartilage tissue or in crustaceans and mussels. The green-lipped mussel is one of the most commonly used sources of glucosamine and chondroitin.

Side effects

Green-lipped mussel extract is generally well tolerated and can also be used on sensitive dogs or pregnant or lactating bitches.
In rare cases, stomach irritation and vomiting may occur - then the amount should be reduced slightly. Slowing down to the recommended dosage over about a week also increases acceptance and tolerability.

The green-lipped mussel powder can be easily mixed into the daily food ration and, despite being of high quality, has a pleasant, unobtrusive smell and taste. Taking capsules, on the other hand, is often a problem, especially for smaller and picky dogs.

Frankincense resin has an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the enzyme that is responsible for maintaining chronic inflammation in the body.

The ancient Egyptians already knew the medicinal effects of willow bark (Salicis cortex), and later Hippocrates and Hildegard von Bingen also used the extract to treat pain in the musculoskeletal system, fever, inflammation and swelling. The ingredients salicin, catechin tannins, flavonoids and chlorogenic acid are primarily responsible for the analgesic and antipyretic properties of willow bark. Salicin is considered a natural model for the chemical aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid); it is the precursor to the anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and fever-reducing salicylic acid. Unlike traditional medical painkillers, there are no unwanted side effects such as stomach problems when taking willow bark products. It should be noted that willow bark promotes diuresis, i.e. it has a diuretic effect, which supports the elimination of toxins from the body. The dog must also have the opportunity to urinate frequently.

Its use has proven particularly useful for inflammatory pain, osteoarthritis (in connection with devil's claw), arthritis and HD.

The silica stimulates the bone-building cells, supports the development of cartilage by building up the cross-links in the cartilage framework, forms the intercellular substance of the bone with collagen hydrolyzate: component of, among other things, tendons, bones and elastic components of the cartilage, which also acts as “glue” to hold the cartilage together.

Mumijo is a complex metabolic product of aerobic microorganisms. It is formed during the decomposition process of plant parts, lichens and resins from the roots of coniferous trees.
